Community Engagement Specialist - Job Summary
Lead community engagement efforts for Mobile, AL’s transit network redesign through inclusive, relationship-driven outreach and milestone-driven launch activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute the community engagement plan including pre-launch outreach and post-launch follow-up
- Build trusted relationships with community organizations, advocates, and local leaders
- Recruit champion partner organizations and lead train-the-trainer sessions
- Plan and lead community events, tabling, and targeted outreach at key locations
- Facilitate rider focus groups and listening sessions and translate insights into recommendations
- Design and deliver education sessions focused on accessibility, paratransit, and senior needs
- Distribute rider- and organization-facing educational materials
- Support municipal and partner briefings with talking points and materials
- Serve as senior local contact for community questions and mentor a field intern
- Provide regular written updates on outreach progress, feedback, and risks
Requirements
- 5+ years in community engagement, advocacy, public affairs, nonprofit partnership roles, or equivalent consulting experience
- Proven ability to build trust with disability, senior, and equity-focused stakeholders in politically sensitive environments
- Experience facilitating trainings, focus groups, and meetings
- Track record delivering measurable outreach outcomes
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Self-directed and able to manage contract plans and escalate risks early
- Preferred experience or ability to work credibly in Mobile, AL or a mid-size Southern city
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for regular field work
