Intern - Communication & Community Engagement - Job Summary

This internship supports the Public Relations & Community Engagement Department through executing communications strategies, creating digital content, supporting media relations, and assisting with community engagement events during the fall 2026 term with a possibility to extend.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute communications strategies including digital marketing asset creation and content development
  • Create social media content such as Instagram reels and stories
  • Draft posts for City of Fishers social media accounts
  • Research, interview, and author blog posts for the City’s blog
  • Draft communications and marketing materials using digital tools including Sprout Social and Canva
  • Contribute ideas to reach new audiences and strengthen community engagement
  • Assist with website content buildout
  • Support media relations by drafting press releases and media advisories and assisting with interviews
  • Collaborate with local businesses and nonprofits on community engagement initiatives
  • Coordinate and execute community engagement initiatives and special events with onsite attendance as needed
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Age 18+ and enrolled in college pursuing a relevant degree
  • Valid driver’s license with at least 3 years driving experience and eligible to drive city vehicle
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage projects under tight deadlines
  • Experience managing social media platforms in a professional or leadership setting
  • Experience with graphic design, photography, and video
  • Basic knowledge of SEO best practices
  • Basic knowledge of email marketing best practices
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office
  • Creative, flexible, self-directed problem solver with strong communication
  • Ability to take and apply project feedback quickly
  • Ability to work onsite approximately 3 days a week, totaling 20-25 hours
  • Personal vehicle for travel during work hours
  • Personal laptop or computer for work purposes
  • Availability to attend some events outside of regular hours (nights and weekends)

Education

Enrolled in college pursuing a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field
