Communications & Community Engagement Intern - Job Summary

The intern will support the department by executing communication strategies, creating digital content, assisting with media relations, and coordinating community engagement initiatives during the spring 2026 semester.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute communications strategies including seeking and creating digital marketing assets
  • Create social media content for City of Fishers accounts
  • Draft social media posts and blog posts
  • Draft communications and marketing materials using digital software tools
  • Contribute ideas to reach new audiences and strengthen community engagement
  • Assist with content buildout for the City’s website
  • Support media relations functions including drafting press releases and advisories
  • Collaborate with local businesses and nonprofits on community engagement initiatives
  • Coordinate and execute community engagement initiatives and special events
  • Perform special projects and other assigned duties

Requirements

  • Be age 18+ and enrolled in college pursuing degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize efficiently under tight deadlines
  • Experience managing social media platforms professionally
  • Experience with graphic design, photography, and video
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite preferred
  • Basic knowledge of SEO best practices
  • Familiarity with content management systems is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of email marketing best practices
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Creative, flexible, self-directed problem solver with attention to detail
  • Ability to apply project feedback quickly
  • Ability to work in-person approximately 3 days a week, 20-25 hours total
  • Possess a vehicle and valid driver’s license with at least 3 years licensed driving experience
  • Provide own laptop or computer
  • Ability to attend some events outside regular hours including nights and weekends

Education

Currently enrolled in a college degree program in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field
