Director of Community Engagement - Job Summary

Lead and design community engagement strategies for Scout Clean Energy's projects, partnering with internal teams and external stakeholders to build support, mitigate opposition, and ensure project success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Developers to assess community context and engagement needs for early projects.
  • Conduct project-level due diligence on community, political, and permitting dynamics.
  • Develop project engagement strategies and messaging.
  • Oversee internal team trainings on engagement best practices.
  • Manage company-wide engagement standards, practices, and centralized materials.
  • Support growth and structure of the Community Engagement Team.
  • Capture lessons learned and establish scalable processes across projects.
  • Lead engagement efforts for high-priority, high-risk projects including stakeholder relationship management.
  • Oversee external consultants as needed.
  • Coordinate local events, sponsorships, and educational opportunities.
  • Represent Scout in public meetings such as county commission and planning boards.
  • Create and implement company-wide community engagement standards and scalable systems.
  • Ensure compliance with laws, permitting, and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate risk drivers and stakeholder dynamics internally to relevant departments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, political science, community development, renewable energy development, environmental studies, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in community organizing, advocacy, campaign management, or stakeholder engagement in renewable energy.
  • Experience in renewable energy, rural communities, environmental management, or local government.
  • Prior management experience overseeing internal and external engagement practitioners.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. local, state, and regional governmental structures; renewable energy permitting familiarity preferred.
  • Effective communication with diverse audiences including public officials and community groups.
  • Experience speaking at county council, planning commission, or similar public meetings.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent organization and project management abilities.
  • Self-motivated problem-solver with sound business judgment.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% and flexibility for some evenings/weekends.
  • Proficient in MS Office; experience with Salesforce, Smartsheet, project management platforms, digital outreach, and mapping tools is a plus.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field such as marketing, communications, political science, community development, renewable energy development, or environmental studies.
